Wombats Make Cube-Shaped Droppings

Wombats are the only animals known to produce cube-shaped droppings.

Researchers found that varying stiffness in the wombat’s intestine shapes the material into corners over a long, slow digestion. Wombats stack these cubes on rocks and logs to mark territory, and the flat sides help keep them from rolling away.
