Alphabet Is Just Alpha, Beta

The word alphabet comes from alpha and beta, the first two letters of the Greek alphabet.
Those letters themselves come from earlier Semitic letters whose names meant ox and house. So when you recite your ABCs, you are at the far end of a very long chain of copying.
