Cashews Grow Under a Fruit

A cashew nut hangs from the bottom of a fruit called the cashew apple.

The seed develops in a kidney-shaped shell below a soft, pear-like fruit. The shell contains an irritating oil, which is why you never see cashews sold in the shell.
